I was thinking about going to school but I couldn’t afford it. My GPA wasn’t great and so I wasn’t eligible for financial aid. My employer does tuition reimbursement. Then this woman named Janelle called me from Bellevue and asked if I was ready to get back to school and earn my degree. I was actually really excited to hear from her!

Janelle kept reaching out to me and advocated for me. I ended up getting a scholarship and her help made that possible! Now I’m back in school and getting my B.S. in computer information systems with a minor in security, which I didn’t even know existed before I talked to Janelle!

Once my success coach Janelle pointed me in the right direction and helped me lay out a strategic plan, I made the decision to go back (to school) in March. I’m in my third week now. I admit, it takes some effort for me to be on top of my time management, especially with working full time. But my success coach Janelle has been with me every step of the way. She checks in with me a bunch and encourages me. She understands what I’m going through, especially when I get overwhelmed and feel like I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. She helps keep me focused on the finish line. I know now there’s no reason for me to stop, especially with all the support I’ve gotten from Janelle.

I got a job at the Clarion Psych hospital in 2013. The people there were wonderful and I knew I wanted to help people with addiction because addiction runs in my family. They referred me through an assessment program, and I enrolled at Clarion College to get a B.A. in rehabilitative science with a focus in addiction. However, I withdrew a year later because I was having serious marital issues. I ended up getting divorced. The stress was too much. I was really at a low point then, plus I was over $30,000 in debt with student loans with nothing good to show for it.

With the help of my ReUp Readmissions Coordinator, Cody, I’ve re-enrolled in school. Cody has helped me figure out I have 57 credits left to complete my degree, which is about 2.5 years. Then he helped me factor in all my other life commitments. He showed me how to get my transcripts, register, and re-enroll. He showed me all these resources to help get my finances in order, come up with a budget, and apply for grants. There was just so much to do, and it was overwhelming just thinking about it! I couldn’t have done it without my coach.

I started college after high school taking business classes. Then I got sick; really sick. It went on for weeks, and then I went to the hospital and they started to freak out because I had an overlarge heart, my kidneys were failing, and my blood pressure through the roof. That’s when I was diagnosed with lupus. I was 20 years old.

My family was a mess. I was a mess, but I was trying to stay strong. I’ll never forget there was this amazing nurse who was with me. She gave up her breaks during her shifts to be with me. She saved my life. After I got better, I decided that’s what I wanted to do--be a nurse and help people. That's when ReUp contacted me. They wanted to know if I was interested in completing my degree, and I said yes!
